The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the ability to challenge certain calls from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
