Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true challenge confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
