Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would board games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
