Residents advised to avoid going out as powerful gusts strike the country.

Intense gales attaining speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 properties experiencing outages and compelled officials to halt over 100 aircraft departures, according to regional news sources.

These gusts are affecting the entire South Island and southern sections of the North Island, per the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have released rare red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in key areas encompassing these major districts.

Residents have been advised to avoid going outside, refrain from journeys, and prepare for additional utility disruptions.

Extensive Impact and Emergency Measures

This outage seems to be impacting residences mostly in the South Island, although agencies state that energy was being slowly brought back.

Local media have indicated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, while utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the gales.

Across Wellington, a person was lost his life after being impacted by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was blown onto approaching vehicles on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel entering and leaving the urban area have been cancelled due to the weather, and some roads and libraries are not operating.

At the same time local leaders have declared a crisis declaration, to facilitate recovery activities.

Strike Action Amid Severe Conditions

The wild winds on today occur while tens of thousands of educators, medical professionals and government employees take part in what has been termed a "major walkout", demanding improved salaries and workplace environments.

But the severe conditions has compelled them to alter some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies shifted to interior venues or cancelled.

Like conditions are also sweeping the nearby nation, ushering in a high-temperature event to the remote areas.

Agencies have issued flame prohibitions for concern about wildfires.
