No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
