Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications need to be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural support.
